The Director General of Hisbah Board Kano State, Malam Abba Sufi has informed prospective couples that registration for next month’s mass wedding has commenced in the state.

Sufi, who made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday at the board’s secretariat, added that the move is in compliance with the recent directives issued to the board by the state government.

According to the statement, people from other states are allowed to register this time around, unlike in the past when participants must come from Kano State.

A Daily Trust reporter who visited Hisbah secretariat, said that women who went to find husbands were being asked to choose from a group of men assembled at the headquarters while men were also asked to choose women of their choice.

Couples who have been married for years were also seen indicating interest to participate in the exercise.

“We have received over 300 men and women who indicated their interest to participate in the next mass wedding.

“After going through the applications, we would further screen the list to verify genuine participants and then forward it to the governor,” the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah on Special Services, Malam Nabahani Usman told Daily Trust.

Mr. Usman further stated that due to the recent economic downturn currently plaguing the nation, many people are expected to participate in the mass wedding especially girls and women whose parents want to marry them off but are unable to afford the cost of preparations.

He assured that pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and genotype test would be conducted before the marriage.
