Mayweather Quits Boxing, Matching Rocky Marciano’s Record

After beating fellow American, Andre Berto, to claim his 49th win in his professional career, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has bowed out of boxing, matching legend Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0.

Mayweather coasted to a one-sided unanimous decision over the hopelessly overmatched Andre Berto before 13,395 fans, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena., with all three judges ruling overwhelmingly in Mayweather’s favor and afterwards the American welterweight world champion confirmed that he was retiring, saying: “My career is over”

“It’s official.”

The unbeaten Mayweather, a world champion for nearly all of his adult life across five weight classes, was in command from bell to bell of his 49th professional fight in defence of his WBC and WBA welterweight titles.

He equals the perfect 49-0 record of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano, embellishing his reputation as the best boxer of his generation.

Mayweather fell to his knees in the ring after the bell, and thanked all the fans before talking about his career and plans for the future

“I want to thank all the fans… for 19 years I would not be able to do it without these fans,”

“But you have to know when it’s time to hang it up. I’m knocking at the door; I’m nearly 40 years old now.

“There’s nothing else to prove in the sport of boxing. I’m leaving the sport with all my faculties; I’m still sharp and smart.”

“I’ve had a great career. Very comfortable, made great investments — I am ‘A’ OK.”

“My 49-0 record is a part of boxing. Records are made to be broken,”

“Hopefully, someday we can find the next Floyd Mayweather. Records are made to be broken. Now it’s time to spend time with my family and children, make sure they get the proper education. I also want to help the fighters under the Mayweather Promotions banner.”

Floyd Joy Mayweather, Jr., born on February 24, 1977, has made more than 700 million dollars in his 19 years career. He is widely recognized as the best boxer of his generation and named amongst the greatest fighters of all time.
