Men Have Disappointed, Anambra Women Vow To Elect Female Governor In 2021

Women in Anambra State, under the umbrella of the United Traders Association (UTA), a nongovernmental organisation, Monday, vowed to ensure the emergence of a female governor for the state during the governorship election scheduled in 2021.

According to them, they would only vote for a male contestant if ‘no female contestant with capability’ vied for the poll.

The national president of UTA, Mrs Nkiruka Duru, who spoke during the first convention of the association held at Umudioka, Dunukofia Local Government Area, disclosed that even though the body was non-political, members were determined to mobilise support for a candidate who showed commitment towards serene environment for women, children and youth emancipation.

She said, “UTA is an empowerment hub for women, with membership nationwide and in the diaspora, such as the UK, Sweden, Israel, Ivory Coast and Togo. In Anambra State, we have 21 coordinators across the 21 local government areas. We also have 235 women’s leaders in 235 markets with not less than 100 members in each market.

“We are not only traders, but mothers. Therefore, we won’t allow the 2021 governorship election in Anambra State to be business as usual. Our governors are disappointing us. We want a governor that shall move Anambra State forward. Our eyes are now widely open. Before we can vote for any candidate, we must make sure the person has the quality and capability to lead, not minding the political platform. We can only support a male candidate with those qualities if no female candidate with capability contests for the poll. We have the number. We shall mobilise our members to vote for the best.”

The spiritual director of the association and founder, Holy Ghost Adoration Centre, Rev Fr Emmanuel Obimma, challenged women to toe the line of the biblical Queen Esther and rise to their responsibilities of liberating the oppressed.
