Military Coup: U.S. Demands Immediate Release Of Myanmar Prime Minister Detained By Army

The United States Government has called for the immediate release of Myanmar’s State Counsellor (prime minister), Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior officials who were detained on Monday after a military coup.

The soldiers who had embarked on the coup d’état in the Asian country (also called Burma), claimed that Suu Kyi rigged the November 2020 general election.

Bloomberg reports that the soldiers promised to conduct a “free and fair general election” later.

But the U.S. said that the mutineering soldiers’ action was a bad development for democracy.

“The United States expresses grave concern regarding reports the Burmese military has detained multiple civilian government and civil society leaders. The military must reverse these actions immediately,” it tweeted on Monday.

On its part, the United Nations (UN) warned that regardless of the current situation, it would work to restore democratic principles in the country.

“The Secretary-General reaffirms the unwavering support of the United Nations to the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democracy, peace, human rights and the rule of law,” it stated.
