Minister Assesses Damage After Immigration Office Fire

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has visited the Headquarters of Nigerian Immigration Service to assess the extent of damage caused by fire which engulfed part of the building on Sunday.

The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaibu Belgore at the NIS headquarters on Monday morning, addressed a cross section of the media, assuring that normal operational activities are ongoing as the inferno did not affect any critical areas of operations.

According to him, the cause of the fire would be ascertained and appropriate measures put in place.

On his part, the Comptroller General of the service, Muhammad Babandede added that a committee was already in place in conjunction with the Federal Fire Service to ascertain the cause (s) of the inferno.

However, a source who spoke to THE WHISTLER on Monday said the fire was caused by obsolete computers.

“The fire started when the obsolete computers started malfunctioning,” he said.

The Immigration boss therefore assured that normalcy would be restored to the affected Offices within the week.

Babandede urged the public to continue to reach the NIS via any of its social media platforms such as email,Twitter, Facebook on @nigimmigration, while efforts are being made to restore services at the Call Centre, one of the Offices affected by the inferno.
