More Rivers Lawmakers Urge Halt To Impeachment Move Against Fubara, Deputy

The push to stop the impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, gathered further momentum as two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly publicly appealed to their colleagues to withdraw the process.

The lawmakers, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Hon. Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made their position known barely 24 hours after two other legislators took a similar stance, suggesting a widening internal resistance to the impeachment bid within the Assembly.

In their appeal, the duo cautioned that pursuing impeachment at this time could further heighten political tension in the state and distract from governance and legislative responsibilities.

They urged their colleagues to embrace dialogue, reconciliation and constitutional restraint in resolving the ongoing political disagreements.

Hon. Nwakoh reportedly stressed that the stability of Rivers State should remain paramount, noting that impeachment is a grave constitutional step that should only be considered as a last resort and not as a tool for deepening political divisions.

He called on lawmakers to reflect on the broader implications of their actions on governance, security and public confidence in democratic institutions.

Similarly, Hon. Amadi appealed for calm and unity within the House, arguing that the interests of Rivers people would be better served through cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government.

She emphasized the need for lawmakers to prioritize peace and development over prolonged political confrontation.

The latest intervention follows a growing chorus of concern from within and outside the Assembly over the impeachment proceedings, which have intensified political uncertainty in the state.
