Muslim Groups Applaud Body Of Benchers Over Firdaus’ Call To Bar

A union of Muslim organisations have applauded the Body of Benchers, Council of Legal Education for allowing Miss Firdaus Amasa to be called to bar with her mini Hijab.

Firdaus, a law graduate, was denied being called to the Nigerian Bar on Dec. 13, 2017, on grounds that she adorned herself with a mini hijab; a veil used by Muslim women to cover the body from the head.

She was finally called to bar on Tuesday 10th June, in a ceremony attended by close friends and family.

Following this, the coalition chairman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, speaking at a Grand Reception in honour of Firdaus in Abuja, said the action taken by the Body of Benchers is “a long walk to the attainment of justice.

“With this bold decision of the body of benchers, the coalition believes that the issue of the use of hijab at the call to the bar and indeed the Nigerian court has finally been put to rest,” he added.

Balogun speaking further urged other institutions both public and private to emulate the action of the Body of Benchers over Firdaus case.

“It is needless to be dissipating energy subsequently on a matter that had been constitutionally and judicially resolved on account of unnecessary sentiments and bias.

“Going forward, we should feel concerned more about issues that unite us as Nigerians rather than create artificial and unproductive cleavages in our relationship.”

Likewise, the Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) Prof. Ishaq Akintola lauded the Nigerian Law School for restoring the confidence of Nigerian Muslims in legal education.
