The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has urged the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to compel road transporters to import only vehicles with in-built speed limit device into the country.

The new chairman of NARTO, FCT chapter, Alhaji Sidi Abubakar, who made this disclosure in Abuja on Wednesday commended the FRSC for introducing the speed limiting device to reduce loss of lives and property through roads crashes, but frowned at using the device to extort money from motorists.

“I am of the view that if the FRSC can contact vehicle manufacturers so that they install speed limit device on vehicles to be imported into the country, it will be better for us,” Abubakar said.

“We in NARTO are in support of any measure aimed at reducing loss of innocent lives and property, but we are equally not in support of using the introduction of the device to extort money from our members.”

Abubakar further revealed that NARTO has remained the highest employer of labour in the country, after the government, adding that the association has contributed immensely in combating unemployment in the country.

Also speaking, NARTO zonal chairman for South-west, Prince Ganiyu Salami called for the establishment of Transport Development Bank in the country in a bid to reduce the high cost of transportation.

According to him, “Every businessman wants his business to grow. And for any business to grow, it must have the support of the banks. But the banks in Nigeria are finding it difficult to give loans to people in the transport sector.

“But if the government can establish the Transport Development Bank, the transporters can go straight to the banks and negotiate for loans in order to assist their businesses.”
