NCDC Reports 3 Fresh Cases of Omicron Variant

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has detected 3 new cases of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 in Nigeria.

The new cases were disclosed by the center in a statement on Tuesday.

It brings the total of the recently discovered variant of the COVID-19 virus in Nigeria to six.

The Omicron variant, which was first reported by South Africa, has been labeled a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization.

In the statement signed by the NCDC Director-General, Ifedayo Adetifa, all the Omicron cases so far were detected in persons with recent travel history to South Africa.

 The statement read, “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has confirmed three more cases of COVID-19 with the B.1.1.529 SARS-CoV-2 lineage, i.e., the Omicron variant, in Nigeria.

“The Delta variant remains the dominant variant and so far, we have not seen the replacement of this variant by the new Omicron variant as observed elsewhere.”
