Newspaper Distributors Protest Alleged Harassment, Extortion In Abia

The Aba branch of Newspaper and Magazine Distributors’ Association, NMDA, Abia State, has staged a protest over alleged police arrest and detention of some of it members.

The protest took place at NUJ Secretariat Aba on Friday morning.

The vendors are protesting alleged intimidation and arrest of its members by the police in Aba.

In a press statement signed by the group’s chairman, Mr Ike C. Ike, the vendors called the attention of Nigerian Union of Journalists, Guild of Editors, Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and human rights organizations, among others, to the “constant harassment, intimidation and arrests” of their members by the SWART security operatives in Aba.

The group alleged that security agents in the commercial city have made newspaper vendors “targets of extortion.”

According to the vendors, one of their members arrested by the police is still in detention while the Police had allegedly demanded the sum of N100,000 for his bail.
