Nexit Gains Momentum Following Brexit Bombshell

The call for the Netherlands to hold a referendum to decide whether to leave the EU is gaining momentum as more an more people are signing the petition.

With expectations that the petition for Netherlands to leave the EU (Nexit) will fail, its organizsers, Patrick Crijns and Peter van Wijmeren, told the Dutch daily NRC that they wanted to “show that there is an interest in a Nexit.”

The petition has since gained over 56,000 signatures (inluding those for and against a Nexit).

Meanwhile, Anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, had moved a motion calling on the Dutch parliament on Monday “to make every effort to hold a referendum on the Dutch membership of the EU as soon as possible, a Nexit.” The motion saw 124 persons against it and 14 persons in support.

According to his motion:

“Everything has just got worse, since the arrival of the euro and the European Union which has seen our national sovereignty abandoned and our borders disappear.”

“We are no longer building anything, but demolishing and dividing. That’s why we want a referendum to quit the EU.” the petition says.

If his Freedom Party (PVV) becomes the largest bloc in the 150-seat parliament in March general elections, Geert Wilders promised he is going to organize a Nexit referendum.

Some experts however think there’s a slim chance other political parties will support his move.
