Niger Govt. Set For Another Showdown With Tanker Drivers, Bars Heavy-Duty Trucks From Minna Roads

The Niger State Government has barred all articulated heavy-duty vehicles from plying roads within the Minna metropolis.

The state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Mamman Musa, disclose this in a press statement issued in Minna on Tuesday.

According to him, the decision became necessary because trailers were destroying the city’s infrastructures and posing a danger to the lives and properties of residents.

He said: “Henceforth, all articulated heavy-duty vehicles are diverted away from Minna city centre, starting from Tuesday, the 19th of October 2021, as part of efforts to safeguard the city Infrastructure, protect lives and property.”

The commissioner also stated that the state government has directed all articulated heavy-duty vehicles coming from Zungeru to Abuja or from Abuja to Zungeru to be diverted either from the city gate in Chanchaga through Kpakungu or Immurat junction in Tudun Fulani through the western bypass.

He charged relevant traffic authorities in the State to enforce the directive, while urging the general public to cooperate and support the efforts of the state government.

This move came 3 weeks after tanker drivers blocked the Bida-Lambata, Lambata-Izom highway over its dilapidated state, as reported by THE WHISTLER.

Although the government has since promised to repair damaged portions of the road, no renovative work was seen when THE WHISTLER visited the affected roads on Monday.
