President Muhammadu Buhari has said the country will begin issuing visas on arrival for all African nationals from January 2020.

Buhari disclosed this in a tweet in his official twitter page on Thursday.

According to the President, he made a formal announcement of the plan while at the Aswan Forum, a peace and development summit in Egypt on Wednesday.

“Nigeria is committed to supporting the free movement of Africans within Africa.  Yesterday at the Aswan Forum in Egypt I announced that, in January 2020, we will commence issuance of visas at the point of entry into Nigeria, to all persons holding passports of African countries,” he said.

Recall that it was challenging for Africans to travel to the continent’s most populous country but in a major change the government has introduced the visa on arrival policy.

In 2018 the government in a move to boost the ease of doing business introduced the visa on arrival policy for business travellers.

The change in visa policy by Nigeria comes on back of the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA), a contract seeking to establish a continent-wide marketplace with increased trade and free movement among its major pillars.

Nigeria, when the new policy is implemented, will join Kenya and Ethiopia as countries which have recently established visa on arrival policies for all African nationals.
