Nigeria Earned N251.9m From Railway, As Passenger Traffic Drops By 222,595

Nigerian railways recorded a decline of 222,595 passengers in the first quarter of 2021 alone compared to the same quarter in 2020.

Rail way passengers dropped to 424,460 in the first quarter as against the 647,055 passenger recorded in the same period of 2020.

The National Bureau of Statistics disclosed this in its rail report.

“The rail transportation data for Q1 2021 reflected that a total of 424,460 passengers travelled via the rail system in Q1 2021 as against 647,055 passengers recorded in Q1 2020 and 134,817 in Q4 2020,” NBS said.

The NBS disclosed that 10,511 tons of goods and cargo travelled through the rail system in Q1 2021, a drop compared to the 18,484 recorded in Q1 2020 and 35,736 in Q4 2020.

According to NBS, revenue generated from passengers in the first quarter of 2021 was N892,467,526 as against N398,999,290 in the last quarter of last year.

The railways made revenue of N640,522,844 in the first quarter 2020.
