What Nigeria Needs Is Repackaging, Not Restructuring, Okorocha Says

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has said repackaging, and not restructuring, is what Nigeria needs to move forward.

Okorocha, at the 67th annual conference of Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON) on Monday, charged the BON to commence a campaign against restructuring of the country.

“Many people have defined restructuring just to benefit their geo-political zones.

“To the South Easterners, restructuring means creation of an additional state, while it may mean resource control to other geo-political zones.

“We are not the worst nation in the world in terms of corruption but we have been presented as the worst nation.

“I urged BON to see Nigeria as its project and repackage it so that we can regain our lost glories”,” said Governor Okorocha.

Okorocha said this in the light of recent agitations for the restructuring of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) have recently said unless calls for Nigeria’s restructuring will be on the basis of “just, fair and equitable principles”, proponents of the term should perish the thought.

The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and some South-Eastern leaders have earlier said they don’t want Biafra, but rather a “restructured Nigeria along the lines of peace, love, fairness, justice, equity and equality of opportunity regardless of creed, ethnicity, gender, or political affiliation.”

“Igbo leaders lend their full support to the restructuring of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the basis of fairness and equity. We therefore call on the Federal Government and all Nigerian leaders to commence a process of dialogue among Nigerians on the modalities of achieving this pressing question within a reasonable frame time,” the group had recently said.

THE WHISTLER recalls that the Southern Leaders Forum, on the other hand, have called on Nigeria’s Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo to implement report of the 2014 National Conference, saying there`s and urgent need to restructure the country now.

“There is an urgent need to restructure Nigeria to achieve true federalism. We will not be distracted by individuals who claim ignorance of what restructuring means or those who try to imply a non-existent sinister plan to break up Nigeria because of the demand for restructuring. We affirm our commitment to the unity of Nigeria and also, insist on the urgent need to restructure Nigeria, to achieve true federalism,” the Forum had said.
