Nigeria Records 4th Jailbreak In 7 Months As Bandits Attack Plateau Prison

Suspected bandits have reportedly attacked a facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Sunday.

The facility located on Joseph Gomwalk road, Jos, is about 5.6km away from the Plateau police headquarters.

Reports said the assailants stormed the building heavily armed, shooting sporadically in the air.

The recent incident brings the number of attacks in the state to three in the last five days.

On Friday, gunmen had attacked and killed 10 locals in Te’egbe community in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

Last Tuesday, some gunmen also attacked Ancha community in Bassa LGA and killed two locals.

The spokesperson for the Miango Youth Development Association, Nuhu Bitrus, confirmed both incidents to the press.

THE WHISTLER reports that the latest incident brings the number of jailbreaks in the country in the last seven months to four.

On April 5, 2021, alleged members of the Eastern Security Network had attacked the Owerri Correctional Centre in Owerri, Imo State, freeing 1,844 inmates and burning down other police facilities within the vicinity of the prison.

About 240 prisoners had also escaped after unidentified gunmen attacked the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State on September 13, 2021.

The Abolongo Correctional Centre located in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Oyo State came under attack on October 22, 2021, when suspected gunmen attacked the facility using dynamite.

All the 837 awaiting trial inmates were freed by the attackers while the assailants killed a security personnel. Some of the inmates were later recaptured.
