#NigeriaDecides2019: Atiku Receives Phone Call From U.S Secretary Of State Pompeo

Ahead of Nigeria’s presidential election on Saturday, the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has phoned the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku said he received the phone call on Friday from Pompeo, who reassured him of commitment of the U.S to supporting the country as Nigerians go to the polls to elect their President.

“Earlier today I received a call from US Secretary of State, @SecPompeo, who reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to free and fair elections in Nigeria,” Mr Abubakar said on Twitter, adding that he hopes Nigerians would have a peaceful exercise.

Recall that former United States President, Bill Clinton, had phoned President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday. But it is however uncertain if Mr Pompeo has also placed a call to President Buhari over the forthcoming elections.

President Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, quoted Clinton as wishing Nigeria ahead of the general elections.

The former United States President had been billed to visit Nigeria today, Friday, to meat with the two leading presidential candidates, but reportedly cancelled his trip on the grounds that he didn’t want his visit to the country to be politicised.
