Nigerian Army Confirms Arrest Of Soldier Who Killed Aba Motorcyclist

The soldier who allegedly shot a motorcyclist to death around Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday, has been arrested by the Nigerian Army.

The soldier was identified by the Army on Saturday as one Ajayi Johnson, who is said to be a lance corporal away from duty without official leave.

Johnson was said to have shot Chimaobi Nwaogu of Umuokereke-Ngwa, Obingwa LGA, for refusing to pay a N100 bribe at a military checkpoint in the community.

Speaking on the soldier’s arrest, the spokesperson for the 82 Division, Colonel Aliyu Yusuf, confirmed that the incident happened around a military base in Ohanze community in Abia.

“The soldier has since been arrested and detained. Disciplinary procedure is in progress. He will be tried according to extant military law and if found culpable will be dismissed and handed over to the civil police for prosecution.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased,” said Yusuf.

THE WHISTLER had earlier reported how youths in the community protested Nwaogu’s murder by carrying his corpse on a truck around the community before the police intercepted it and deposited the body in a morgue.

In his reaction to the incident, Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu said, “The death of this young man is extremely painful and cannot go in vain,” the governor told the residents.

“This is my position and this is the position of the government and people of Abia State,” said Ikpeazu.
