Nigerian Coaches Who Could Take Gernot Rohr’s Job

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) loves to hire foreign coaches for the national teams, especially the Super Eagles-most of who often fail.

But there are Nigerian coaches doing well in the domestic league-the Nigerian Professional Football League.

Algeria, Senegal and Ghana are three of the African countries where nationals are heading the national teams.

Local coaches in Nigerians clubs have however been quite impressive in their coaching careers.

Clubs like Enyimba FC, Kano Pillars, Enugu Rangers, Akwa United and Plateau United have achieved immense results due to the role of these coaches.

Usman Abd’Allah

Enyimba head coach Usman Abd’Allah born in Kaduna state was an ex Super Eagles player.

He first coached in the French lower division for EPS FC, FC Sete, FC Frontignan and Bollene FC.

Abd’Alla hold UEFA B licence Certificate and a UEFA A licence obtained in England.

He has degrees in football coaching and team management at Le CREPS de Montpellier, France.

National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) Level 1 from Singapore and the Laliga Coaching Certificate.

He cut his professional teeth in Nigeria with Kano Pillars as an assistant coach and also oversaw the youth team of the club.

So far, He won the Nigeria Professional Football League title in 2018/19 season.

November ranking of football clubs in the world has placed Enyimba FC at 431 in the world, ranked 27 in Africa and rated 1 in Nigeria.

So far in the 2019/2020 domestic league Enyimba is second with 7 points.

Ibrahim A. Musa

The head coach of Kano Pillars, Ibrahim A. Musa is one of the local coaches with prospects.

Kano Pillars is ranked 550 in the world, 33 in Africa and number 2 in Nigeria.

In the current league standing, Kano Pillars is ranked seventeen with 1 point.

Benedict Ugwu (Surugede)

Rangers FC another decorated Nigerian club is ranked 586 in the world, 42 in Africa and 3 in Nigeria. Rangers is nine in the league with 4 points.

Head coach of Rangers Benedict Ugwu popularly called ‘Surugede’, played for 10 years for the ‘Flying Antelopes’ during which time he won the FA Cup in 1983 and 1984. He also played for BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors of Borno, 3SC, and was a former player for rangers.

Ugwu has coaching badges from the NIS and CAF.

Akwa United ranking in the world is 628, 49 in Africa and 4 in Nigeria.

Also, in the domestic table it is at 16 with 2 pionts.

John Obuh

He is the head coach of Akwa United and oversaw Nigeria’s under-17 team during the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup after leaving Kwara United due to a payment dispute.

On 20 July 2013,. Obuh resigned as manager of the Nigerian under-20 team and on 29 October 2013.

He was appointed manager of Kwara United on 16 January 2016 but left after two years.

In 2009 he led the Nigerian U-17 team to the FIFA U-17 World and ended as Cup-Runners-up and in 2010 won the WAFU Club Championship with Sharks F.C. of Port-harcourt.

Abdul Maikaba

He is the head coach of Plateau United, one of the finest clubs in Nigeria is ranked 643 in the world, 53 in Africa and 5 in Nigeria.

The club is placed first in the domestic league table with 9 points.

Maikaba joined plateau United in October 2019, was the head coach of Akwa United and Wiki Tourist boss.
