Nigerian Female Students Who Shattered Academic Records In 2021

At least six Nigerian female students made academic waves at home and overseas in the year 2021, graduating with record-breaking performances from their respective institutions.

The students demonstrated that when it comes to academic brilliance, Nigerian ladies are no push-overs.

Here are some of the students who distinguished themselves academically this year:

1. Uzoaku Odinakachukwu

She stole the show when she emerged the overall best graduating medical student from the Univeristy of Uyo. She recorded the highest scores and received awards in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Biochemistry and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

She also received awards for being the best in Anatomy, Physiology, Paediatrics, Surgery, Clinical Biochemistry, Laboratory Medicine and Communal Medicine.

2. Somtochi Amuche

THE WHISTLER reported earlier this month when Amuche broke all the barriers by graduating with a First Class degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University pf Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

The beauty and brain proved herself brilliantly in a field dominated by men.

She is the second child of Dr. Onyekwere Okpara, a former Rector of Abia State Polytechnic and Mrs. Chinwe Ijeoma Okpara, a banker.

3. Basirat Rufai

Back in February, Rufai emerged the best graduating student of the Department of Pharmacy, from the prestigious University of Ibadan.

With a CGPA of 6.9 in a 7 point system, she missed graduating with a perfect CGPA by a hair’s breadth. She was also the overall best graduating student of the school. Rufai attributed her success to hard work and doing the right things at the right time always.

4. Fareedah Oyolola

Back in August, Oyolola was honoured by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for being one of the brightest students in the world.

The recognition came as a result of her fabulous performance in the School and College Ability Test (SCAT), which students are required to undergo for the Center to determine their academic abilities before admitting them.

Oyolola, a student of Greensprings School, Lagos, took 100 question test in 44 minutes and  scored among the 92nd percentile for verbal reasoning and 87th percentile for quantitative reasoning.

5. Alaba Ann Tam Danagogo

Danagogo, a native of Rivers State, was the overall best graduating student at the Syracuse University in New York, USA.

She graduated with distinctions in her major, Biology, and her minor, English and Textual Studies. She was also awarded the 1870 scholarship by the university for another four year Medical Studies.

She graduated summa cum laude, with a 3.97 CGPA out of 4 and was recognised as a Distinguished Syracuse University Scholar.

6. Joy Adesina

Adesina broke the all-time record in Medicine at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, when she graduated in October.

She received 9 awards and recorded distinctions in 10 subjects including Surgery, Community Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Child Health, Dermatology, Mental Health, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology.

Adesina is the niece of the President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina.

    A record was broken at the Faculty of Law, University of Uyo by IKANNA OKIM. She is the first to graduate with a first degree in the faculty after about 30 decades. Please add her to the list. She deserves it.
