Nigerian Judges Barred From Using Social Media

In a bid to keep them away from “matters of public interest”, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, has restrained Nigerian Judges from using social media.

Justice Onnoghen specifically barred all judges in the country from uploading pictures of their “personal activities” on the internet.

The CJN gave the directive on Monday while delivering a speech at the 2018 Induction Course for some newly appointed Judges and Kadis.

At the event which took place at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja, Justice Onnoghen said it is henceforth prohibited for Nigerian judges to discuss matters of public interest online.

“As Judicial Officers, you must refrain from matters of public interest on the internet and social media. You must also desist from uploading pictures of your personal activities online. In the light of the aforesaid, caution is obviously the operative word” said the CJN.
