Nigerian Wrongly Jailed For 12 Years, Was Inspired To Become A Lawyer

Once a convict, a Nigerian man, Akpoghene Edeno, has become a licensed lawyer after he was wrongfully jailed for 12 years.

Edeno was said to have been wrongfully accused of murder and was subsequently sentenced to prison, but he did not allow his ordeal to define his future in a negative way.

Edeno’s story was shared on Facebook by a childhood friend, Charles Mallam-Obi, who applauded him for making something out of his misfortune.

Obi said the ex-convict sat for the West African Senior School Examination (WASSCE) while in prison and proceed to study law at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) after serving out his term in 2012.

Obi wrote, “Akpoghene Edeno is my childhood friend who spent twelve years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. He wrote WAEC while still in prison. He came out in 2012 and immediately proceeded to the University of Benin to study law. Today, he has been called to the Nigeria bar.

“His story is a testament to how indomitable the determined human spirit is. He could have been bitter at the society for the injustice of suffering for an offense he didn’t commit. He could have been depressed. But he chose to show up and face the challenges of life,” he wrote.
