Nigerians Bash ASUU Again As Union Opposes FG’s Plans To Slash Education Budget

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to slash education and health budgets in the proposed 2020 revised appropriation.

But the warning did not go down well with many twitter users who could not hide their feelings after ASUU’s tweet on Monday.

The union had claimed that the federal government was proposing a slash of 50.76 billion naira from the 111.78 billion naira budgeted for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and a cut of 26.51 billion naira from the 44.49 billion naira allocated to Basic Health Care.

Ironically, ASUU’s intervention prompted some Nigerians to ask the university lecturers some questions of their own.

Some were at a loss as to ASUU’s grievances and asked what the union actually wants from the federal government.

Some said the union was just concerned about money, and not the welfare and education of students.

Another used the opportunity to ask when the indefinite strike would be called off.

Recall that ASUU had embarked on an indefinite strike action on the grounds that the federal government failed to meet the agreed terms of its memorandum of action.

The most contentious has been the federal government’s insistence on capturing all lecturers on federal government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System(IPPIS)
