The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has attributed hunger in the land to sheer laziness on the part of Nigerians.

The Sultan made this assertion while reacting to comments by Chairman of the Shura Committee of the National Islamic Centre, Malam Ahmad Bello, at the 22nd annual Ummah convention in Sokoto.

Bello had called on the Federal Government to address the “extreme hunger” currently ravaging the country.

“Let us be very frank and blunt about this. There is hunger, extreme hunger in the land. There is no better evidence of this than the millions of our hapless children, all victims of cruel parental neglect, who go about begging for food from households, on streets, or just eating out of dustbins.

“Our political and spiritual leaders must do something about this, and urgently too, as it would be a crime, a sin and a folly not to do so,” Bello had said.

But the Sultan in his response said, “The chairman, Shura committee talks about hunger in the land but let me make it clear that we are hungry because we are lazy.”

Abubakar’s comment was in the same vein as what he told about 2,000 women who recently graduated from several skill acquisition programme organised by the Wife of Sokoto State Governor, Mairo Tambuwal.

The monarch had condemned street begging, saying it has no basis in Islam.

“Our women should always desist from street begging, as it has no base in Islam and it only generates more harm than good among the society,” he said.

“Women have always been the pillars for any societal development, so we need to do more in encouraging and supporting their living standard in order to yield a better society.

“Moreover, empowering women is one of the positive base to a better, secured and productive society,” the Sultan said.
