Nigerians React As Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Jigawa Close Schools

Two issues are bordering Nigerians today, Wednesday – the rising cases of covid-19 infections in the country as well as the abduction of pupils at a secondary school in Katsina; and the development has led to the closure of schools in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa and Zamfara States by their respective governments.

In Zamfara state, the commissioner for education, Ibrahim Gusau, disclosed that some schools sharing border with Katsina and Kaduna states had to be shut for security reasons.

“The affected schools are at a location sharing boundaries with Katsina and Kaduna States and given the current situation in the neighbouring Katsina state we felt compelled to close these schools even though the term is ending in one week’s time,” he said.

As for Kano state, the Chairman on Social Media, Basiru Yusuf Shuwaki, had revealed that “the Executive Governor of Kano State has approved the closure of all public and Private Schools in the State with immediate effect. Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/ wards back home from 16th Dec, 2020.”

Similarly, the Jigawa state government states that the closure of schools “is with immediate effect.”

On his part, the Kaduna state government said that in view of the rising cases of the coronavirus, schools would remain shut till further notice.

“As part of efforts to contain the surge in Covid-19 infections in the state, all schools have been directed to close by Wednesday, 16 December 2020,” Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-rufai, had tweeted.

As a confirmation of the presence of the pandemic in the country, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that 758 new covid-19 cases were registered on Tuesday.

In its breakdown, it said that a total number of 74,132 cases, 1,200 deaths and 66,494 recoveries had been registered.
