NLC Insists On N30,000 Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), President Ayuba Wabba has said that the labour would not back down on the proposed N30, 000 as minimum wage.

Wabba said the N30, 000 was arrived at in line with the tripartite negotiation procedure as enshrined in convention 1 of ILO and in due consultation with state governors.

“The state governors were represented by six of their colleagues, one representing each of the six geopolitical zones. Outside that there were public hearings in Abuja and in six geopolitical zones where 12 of them actually quoted figure before we arrived at the figure,” the NLC President told newsmen.

Recall that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the NLC had announced that it will begin a nationwide strike which is set to commence on November 6, 2018.

“We are going to have a nationwide mobilisation on October 31 which is Tuesday across all 36 states and Abuja. Then we will be in Lagos to review our strategy and if there is no positive response by November 6, we will resume our strike,” the organised labour had announced, weeks back.

Ahead of the plan industrial action, members of the Economic Management Team led by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo met with some state governors on the issue of the new national minimum wage on Monday.

The organised labour has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government over a demand for an increase in the minimum wage.

The unions rejected the proposal of the government to raise the minimum wage from N18,000 to N24,000.
