Nnamdi Kanu’s Counsel Ejiofor Says ‘Legal Giant’ To Join Defense Team

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria has joined the defense team of the leader of the Indigenious People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu is facing treason charges before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The SAN, whose name was not disclosed, was revealed in an update by Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on Tuesday, days after the trial judge, Binta Nyako had frowned at his behavior in open court.

Recall that Ejiofor has on December 2 spoken about his application for the abridgement of time from January 19 to a closer date.

He further pleaded with Justice Binta Nyako to hear his other suits same day; an application challenging the competency of the seven count charges instituted against his client as well as the jurisdiction of the court to hear the case.

He had also argued that the Department of State Services (DSS) was maltreating his client, denying him good meal and adequate medication.

But the judge said that the adjournment was right, and read out her tight schedule for the remainder of the year.

She eventually decided to reduce the time of adjournment by one day, that is, to January 18.

Nyako also directed Ejiofor to put his allegation against the DSS in an affidavit.

She however ordered the DSS to give Kanu the maximum comfort possible.

In a Facebook post, Ejiofor announced that a senior lawyer has join the team that will represent Kanu in court.

“We paid our routine visit to our untiring, unwavering, unrelenting, rock-solid and noble client, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, at the DSS detention facility at Abuja. The visit, this time, was spectacular and was greeted by an infectious air of camaraderie. Onyendu was particularly enthused by the visit and preferred to describe it as ‘A SURPRISE CHRISTMAS PRESENT’.

“You may not understand the peculiarity of this visit and the how significant it is. But in due course, I am certain you will be in the best position to fully appreciate the wisdom that informed it. Suffice it to say that as the lead attorney of Onyendu, I took advantage of the visit to unveil a legal giant, a distinguished and an accomplished member of the Inner Bar, whom I have chosen to fortify our defence team. The learned Senior counsel is an excellent and a consummate learned gentleman, distinguished in academics and in the practice of law in our law courts. The reason that informed this arrangement is my unflinching desire to throw in every weapon in our arsenal to ensure that Onyendu gets the BEST at all times.

“This latest master stroke, evident in the legal giant that has intervened, came to Onyendu as a big surprise. Although he was not oblivious of my arrangement to enlist the assistance and co-operation of a Senior attorney, he did not know that I could get a Senior attorney of the rarest breed,” he stated.

With the addition of a SAN in Kanu’s team, it implies that Ejiofor may not be the one defending Kanu in the matter, if the senior lawyer appears during proceedings alongside him.
