NNPC: Pipeline Security Officials Detained Over Illegal Oil Wells

The security officials posted to secure the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines that run from Atlas Cove to Ejigbo and Mosimi depots both in Lagos and Ogun states have been arrested for alleged involvement in the construction of over 310 illegal oil wells.

Daily Trust reports that the information was disclosed in a statement by the Command Information Officer, of the Western Naval Command, Thomas Otuji.

The officials who allegedly constructed the illegal well for the purpose of product theft included officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

According to the statement, the 20 security officials are currently undergoing interrogation at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), BEECROFT, Apapa, where they are detained.

The illegal oil wells were said to have been discovered by soldiers participating in the ongoing joint military operation code name “Operation KURONBE” at Atlas Cove.

Reports also disclosed that some of the illegal oil wells were discovered to have been located right inside the security post of the officials that were directed to secure the product area, necessitating the suspicion of an alleged involvement of the security operatives.

The statement further added that devices which include fabricated pipes and multiple hoses connected to the NNPC pipelines were discovered over 300 points along the pipelines during the raid on the area.
