NNPC To Boost Gas Utilisation In Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) has said the activation of the Gas Network Code would provide an opportunity to widen the utilisation of gas in the country.

The Group Managing Director, NNPC Mele Kyari, said this on Monday during the flag-off of the operation of the Nigeria Gas Transportation Network Code.

According to him, the NNPC is at the center of delivering gas to the domestic and export markets.

He said “We see the Network Code as an opportunity to widen the utilization of gas and ensuring that Federal Government’s objective of making gas a major source of income and development comes to reality.”

The NNPC Boss assured that the network code is the beginning of progress for the industry, adding that not having a structure to transport gas from source to the end user will amount to waste of time.

”Some of our financing structures are hinged on tariff on gas transportation. We can’t get that right until there’s the right framework which the Network Code provides,” he added.

He reiterated that NNPC would be looking forward to further collaboration with all partners around the laudable project.

The Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code was launched at the opening ceremony of the 3rd edition of Nigeria International Petroleum Summit in February.

The Gas Transportation Code is a contractual framework between the gas transportation network operator and gas shippers that specifies the terms and guidelines for operation and use of Gas Network.

The implementation of the Code would provide open and competitive access to gas transportation infrastructure and development of the gas sector.

The code would also stimulate the domestic gas market, drive gas-based industrialization and the realization of the Federal Government’s aspiration to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.
