No Burning Of Tyres During Crossover Celebration, Police Warn

The Nasarawa State Police Command has banned the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities ahead of New Year celebrations across the state, citing public safety, environmental protection, and infrastructure preservation.

The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, issued the directive as part of measures to curb disorderly conduct traditionally associated with end-of-year festivities.

He ordered Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the ban across all jurisdictions and arrest individuals who violate the directive, with offenders to face prosecution in accordance with the law.

The police leadership anchored the decision on recurring incidents linked to tyre burning, including damage to “public and private property, obstruction of road networks, and risks to lives caused by uncontrolled fires and thick smoke.”

According to the Command, such activities also contribute significantly to environmental pollution and create security vulnerabilities during large public gatherings.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, the Command explained that the measure was necessary to “protect critical government and private infrastructure from damage and defacement, prevent environmental pollution, and ensure the free flow of traffic and public safety during the festivities.”

The police further addressed the role of vulcanizers in preventing the misuse of discarded tyres, stressing the need for responsible disposal practices.

Quoting the Commissioner, the statement said “vulcanizers are urged to ensure that all used tyres are properly disposed of or taken away at the close of business each day to prevent unauthorised access by members of the public.”

The Command also placed responsibility on parents and guardians to actively discourage children and wards from participating in tyre burning or related acts that could lead to injuries, arrests, or other legal consequences.

Reaffirming its operational readiness, the Command stated that it would deploy personnel and resources to maintain order before, during, and after the New Year celebrations.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free New Year celebration for all residents of the State.”
