Muhammad Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, says he won’t allow what he described as “resistance from the society”, deter his drive for a changed Nigeria.

Sanusi said this on Thursday when Mohammed Fall, the new country representative of UNICEF, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Kano, the Daily Trust reports.

He admitted that change is always faced with stiff resistance in any part of the world where it is introduced.

The Emir however said he will not let the resistance deter him from his drive for change as it is meant for the “betterment of the society”.

He said: “Change is always difficult in any society; not only in Kano or in Nigeria but the world at large.

“Once, you want to bring change, especially that which has to do with the old tradition, it always meets with resistance from the society.

“I’m very aware of this, but that will never discourage me in my drive toward change. I know that there are a lot of people in the society that really understand what I’m driving at.

“I’m therefore calling on everybody; the Ulama, the contractors, the students, the youth leaders, Muslims, especially you, the UNICEF, to come and rally round me as I am ready to pursue this agenda to a logical conclusion. I know I will succeed because the change is meant for the betterment of the society.”

Sanusi faced backlash, particularly in northern Nigeria, following comments he made on predominant issues in the society.

He criticized conservative northern leaders who discouraged attitudes and activities that would have developed the region.

Recently, he was under investigation for alleged mismanagement of N4 billion belonging to the Kano State Emirate Council. The probe which was launched by the state house of assembly was however suspended.
