NPL To Resume January – NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said that the 2016 Nigeria Premier League (NPL) season will kick off in January 2016. A top official disclosed.

According to the spokesperson, the decision is to enable clubs playing at the continental level prepare effectively for both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

There were speculations that the new NPL season will commence after the CHAN tournament, which is scheduled to take place between January 16 and February 7 in Rwanda.

However, speaking to Africanfootball.com, a top official of the Federation debunked the speculation, adding that the League has to get going as 23-players alone cannot drag it backward.

He said: “The league will not wait for 23 players (who will make the final squad for the CHAN) to start.

“We need to get going so that our clubs in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup will get some matches under their belt before their preliminary matches in February.”

Meanwhile, the NFF in their Annual General Assembly on Wednesday December 16, 2015, approve a proposed January kick-off date for the new season.
