Ogoni: FG Kicks Off Clean-up In Dec, 2 Months To 2019 Election

Two months to the 2019 elections, the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will commence the clean-up of Ogoniland in December, which was one of its 2015 campaign promises.

According to reports, the government will commence the Ogoni clean-up toward the end of the year in fulfillment of its promise to the people of Ogoni in Rivers State.

Speaking at the pre-contract award meeting held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Tuesday, the Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Jubril, reassured Ogoni people of the Buhari government’s commitment to beat deadline on the project.

Jubril was represented by his technical assistant, Dr Ishayaku Mohammed, at the meeting organized by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

The minister said, “The stage we are in now is the procurement process. We have 183 companies that are pre-qualified and have been asked to submit their documents to bid for contract.

“All bids are supposed to end on September 24 followed by financial evaluation. There is a timeline for each process.

“We have matching orders that by the end of October, people should be seen on the field,” he said.

He equally disclosed that the government has opened an escrow account for HYPREP’s board of trustee, adding that $177 million had been deposited in it.
