Ogun Govt Seals Houses To Curb Open Defecation – Perm Sec

For failing to provide toilet facilities, the Ogun State government has sealed some houses in Abeokuta.

While disclosing that the sealing of the houses was a way of curbing open defecation in the state, the government threatened to seal more houses in the state.

This is just as it embarks on the implementation of the law against open defecation in the state.

Speaking to newsmen after the houses were sealed, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mrs Yetunde Dina said the exercise will be extended to other parts of the state, saying.

She noted that the Ministry will not stop until the state achieves zero tolerance for open defecation which she said would, in turn, improve public health.

Earlier, the state government had through the Ministry of Environment served a 21-day abatement notice to owners of houses without toilets in some parts of the state, warning them to either provide toilet facilities or have their houses sealed.

Dina said, “The state government could no longer allow them to flout the earlier warnings to them to provide toilets, as it has been discovered that majority of their inhabitants, if not all are involved in Open Defecation.”

“Their attitude contravenes the state Environmental Laws because open defecation pollutes the state underground water level”.

Areas where houses were sealed by the officials of the state Environmental Health Management are Igbore and Isala-Ake in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.
