Oil Workers Make Up 60% Of Rivers COVID-19 Cases – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that 60% of Coronavirus (COVID-109) patients in the state are oil workers.

Wike, according to a statement issued by the press unit of the Rivers Government House, stated this while receiving the management team of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited in Port Harcourt.

The governor told his guests that the situation left him with no option than to request that oil workers coming into Rivers must get tested for COVID-19.

THE WHISTLER reported how Wike had ordered the quarantine of 22 Exxon Mobil workers for allegedly violating the COVID-19 lockdown directive in the state.

The governor noted that 3 out of 14 oil workers allegedly quarantined by the Nigeria Airforce Base, Port Harcourt, had tested positive for the virus.

“It’s not in anybody’s interest to deny people to carry out their official duties. Oil is the main stay of the economy of Nigeria and without it we that is in this part of the country will find it difficult to function.

“My concern is that companies should always notify government of workers they are bringing into the state, so that our health officials can monitor them.

“So, all that we are saying is that we should work together. But people bring in politics that Rivers State is difficult, they don’t want any oil exploration, that is because people want to play politics.

“People say we don’t want foodstuff and livestock to come into the State. That is not correct. What we are saying is that human beings should not be hidden with these items, ” the governor told his guests.

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday night, Rivers State had a total of 53 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
