Oko Poly Reacts To Student’s Attempt To kill Newborn

The authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, has
condemned the attempt on Friday by one of its students to kill her
newborn baby. The student was reported to have thrown the baby across
a fence, but the child hung on a barbed wire where it was rescued and
rushed to hospital.

The public relations officer of the polytechnic, Obini Onuchukwu,
in an exclusive interview with THE WHISTLER said although the
institution was yet to make a formal response, the school condemns in
its totality the dastardly act.

He said, “It is our responsibility to ensure that we produce students
of high morals. As I speak with you, indecent dressing is not allowed
in our school. We have a new office for students’ ethics.
Specifically, we got to hear about this child abuse like everyone. We
already detailed our security department to get the full details. It
is unfortunate. It actually happened in a privately owned hostel,
outside the polytechnic’s environment. We are not in control of what
they do there, although it worries us because it tarnishes our good
reputation.”

Obini further called on parents to mould the characters of their wards
in Godliness, saying, “I commend parents who follow up their children
even in schools, knowing the kind of friends they keep and maintaining
absolute intimacy with them. Bad children constitute nuisance to
society at large. So while we do our best, we expect the family
institution to do theirs.”

It would be recalled that a student of the institution last Friday
gave birth to a baby girl in her boyfriend’s room at Munachi Hostel,
Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, and tried to kill the baby by
throwing it over the fence from the first floor of the hostel.
An eyewitness said luck ran out of them when the baby
was found hanging on the barbed wire of the fence. It was later
rescued by good Samaritans and rushed to Chukwunoso Hospital, opposite
the Polytechnic.

It was gathered that an HND 1 student of Public Administration
Department connived with his roommate to allow the former’s girlfriend
to be delivered of the baby in their room so they could carry out
their evil machination.

A source from Oko Police Station, who did not want to be mentioned,
said the culprits are currently at large, but the boyfriend’s roommate
had been arrested.
