Only Criminals Are Against Amotekun – Gani Adams

The Aare Ona Kankanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has lauded the federal government’s green-light to the South West to proceed with the establishment of its regional security network known as ‘Amotekun’.

Adams described as a welcome development the truce reached on Amotekun between the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and the governors from the South West after an initial resistance from the federal government.

He said only criminally minded persons would oppose an initiative such as Amotekun.

“It is necessary for our governors to (let us) have our own security network, Amotekun. Life is precious. You don’t politicise the issue of security” Adams said on Monday when he led members of the pan-Yoruba development interest group, the Oodua Progressive Union Worldwide on a visit to the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, in Ado Ekiti, the state’s capital.

Adams who noted that the security outfit was for the safety of Nigerians in general, said: “We don’t need to continue throwing missiles at ourselves in the media. Anybody who stands as an antagonist to Amotekun, I will perceive that person in two forms. One, he has some agenda to destroy our zone; or two, he is an agent of criminals.

“Definitely, the agreement between the Federal Government and the South-West governors is a welcome development. It is for the progress of the country.”

Addressing his guests, Governor Fayemi assured them that Amotekun was not a secession agenda

“Amotekun is not political, it is established for the protection of our people and to stem the tide of armed robbery, kidnapping, illegal destruction of lives and property,” said Fayemi who was represented by the deputy governor, Bisi Egbeyemi.
