Orji Kalu Opens Up On 2023 Presidential Ambition

Barely two months after returning from the Kuje prison, former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said he would contest the 2023 presidential election if he gets the required support from the electorate.

Kalu, who is the Chief Whip of the present 9th Senate, stated this when he visited former Head of States, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, at their residences in Minna, Niger State, on Monday.

“I am still in the Senate, and I will seek reelection into the senate but if our people want me to serve as President I will not hesitate.

“Zoning is not a constitutional matter in APC, any person can contest any post in APC,” he said.

The two-time former governor, who currently represents Abia North in the Senate, had regained his freedom from the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) on June 3.

A Federal High Court in Lagos had in December, 2019, sentenced him to 12 years in jail following his trial for alleged N7.65 billion corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had prosecuted him for allegedly using his company to siphon the said sum from the coffers of the Abia State Government during his tenure in office

He had spent about six months in Kuje Prison until the Supreme Court reversed the judgment and called for a retrial.

THE WHISTLER had reported that Kalu had promised to help his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to penetrate the southeast more in 2023.
