Orji Kalu Under Fire For Calling Nnamdi Kanu’s Supporters ‘Insane’ After Visiting IPOB Leader

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu representing Abia North in the National Assembly, Tuesday, came under heavy criticism after calling some of Maazi Nnamdi Kanu’s faithful ‘insane’ in the aftermath of his visit to the detained IPOB leader who is still in the custody of the Department of State Services on Monday.

Dr Kalu, in a verified Facebook post, had written, “I visited my brother, Maazi Nnamdi Kanu, in DSS custody, Abuja. I met him in good health and care and we discussed as ‘Umunne’. In 2001 when I was governor, I made his father, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, traditional ruler of Afara Ukwu, and since then, the family has been very close to me.

“I understand that Nnamdi has an insane amount of people rooting for his back home, and I encouraged him to consider the consequences of certain actions and utterances for the sake of the same people.

“Even though my ideology and his ideology are totally different, God has made us brothers and we can’t run away from each other. Whether he and his family listen to me or not, I will continue counselling him.  What we need most is a peaceful and secure society.”

Some people who read the post seemed to think that Kalu was referring to IPOB supporters as insane.

Obinna Malachy, in a reaction, posted, “You people should not mind Senator Orji Uzo Kalu. He is part of the Southeast problems. He single-handedly destroyed Abia State because of his selfish interest.”

Jude Onah posted, “You’re calling people fighting for their rights insane? Tell yourself the truth about the marginalisation of Ndígbo. You want peace and security, yet you are calling freedom fighters ‘insane’. Do you really need that peace and security?”

King Caesar wrote, “He is fighting to liberate his people while you are fighting for your pocket. You just want to use your visit to him and gain followers. Just when we thought that Fani Kayode has gone, another Fani Kayode has emerged from Southeast.”

Okoro Okebugwu wrote, “The truth is that there wouldn’t have been any Nnamdi Kanu if the Southeast leaders lived up to expectations. Nevertheless, the right thing to do at this point is to secure his unconventional release and also work towards the actualization of Biafra. What Nnamdi KANU is pursuing is legal and legitimate.”

Ifeanyi Ezemanari however commended Dr Kalu, saying, “Thank you for standing by him in his trying times. The unity of Ndi Igbo is the fundamental force we need first, with which we can surge ahead and fight the common enemy. Our brotherhood is our strength.”

For Opera Kennedy, “All centre on one point: to give Ndigbo president or Biafra or make Nigeria a true federalist state. To negotiate with Nnamdi Kanu or call for a referendum will help your presidential ambition.”

Chisom Daily wrote, “We need a country where everyone is at peace. Let’s not forget what prompted his actions. I salute my governor, my senator, and my brother.”
