Osun Guber: APC Settle For ‘Direct Primary’

Aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have to scale direct primaries for one of them to emerge as candidate of the party for the September 22 Osun governorship election.

National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, announced this after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, on Monday.

Oshiomhole said the direct primary was the most democratic way to ensure that a truly popular candidate emerges.

“Under this arrangement, all card carrying members of the party in the state will be involved in the process of selecting the party’s candidate,” he said.

THE WHISTLER learnt that the NWC of the APC settled for direct primaries based on the recommendation of the Osun State Working Committee of the party.

In a resolution at a meeting, weekend, in Osogbo, chaired by Prince Gboyega Famodun, the SWC anchored the recommendation on the grounds that direct primary will give every member of the party the opportunity to be involved in the nomination process as against indirect primary.

The state chapter further said it would signify popular participation by ensuring the largest participation of members across the state; promote democracy, reduce intimidation of delegates, bribery and other electoral malfeasance; address the fear of imposition; promote popular participation and prevent monetisation of the process.

Famodun had noted that Osun APC has been using direct primaries for all its internal electoral activities since 2014 such as the governorship primaries of 2014 and the January 2018 local government election.
