Our System Will Capture Your IMEIs Without Your Notice- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that its system will automatically capture the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of Nigerians who use mobile phones.

The commission said it has no business tasking Nigerians to submit their IMEIs which could be obtained through the Device Management System.

The Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the Ministry of Communication to enforce the Device Management System.

According to the policy, the NCC is expected to have the IMEI of all mobile phone users within three months three months from July.

Based on reports, the NCC would require Nigerians to submit their IMEI directly to the commission.

But in a statement on Friday, NCC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Adinde, denied any intention to direct Nigerians to submit their 15- digit IMEI.

NCC said, “At no time did the commission issue a statement regarding the registration of IMEI by subscribers and it has no plans to do so.”

“The reports in question have emanated from a section of the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari and which has been uploaded on the commission’s website.

“The DMS will essentially protect subscribers against phone theft and will identify and enable the elimination of fake devices from the networks.

“The system will capture IMEI automatically without any requirement for subscribers to submit the same.”
