Outrageous Electricity Bills: Court Jails Enugu DisCo’s Managers

The Manager and Marketing Manager of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Onitsha, were on Tuesday “committed to prison for three months” over outrageous bills.

This comes after traders of the Iweka Electronic Amalgamated Traders Association, Onitsha, dragged the pair to court for disconnecting their electricity supply for refusing to pay an estimated bill of N2 million .

It was gathered that the traders had on May 23, 2016 secured an interim court injunction ordering the DisCo to maintain a previous estimated bill.

But the EEDC officials were said to have, however, gone behind to disobey the order by disconnecting the traders’ power supply.

Justice Ike Obu, while delivering his judgment, described as “crass impunity” the act by the EEDC managers.

“You are hereby committed to prison for three months until you purged yourselves of the contempt,” the judge said.

In his reaction, Chairman of the market, Mr. Ndubuisi Egotanwa, said the EEDC workers had “thought that no person, group of persons or even the court can stop them from their illegal disconnection and crazy bills”.
