Oyetola Wins Osun Governorship Election

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, has been declared the winner of the Osun State election.

This was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday.

Oyetola who is Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s Chief of Staff and cousin to Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the party, polled 255,505 votes.

Recall that he won APC’s first-ever direct primary by polling 127, 017 votes to beat Yusuff Lasun, Deputy Speaker of the House of representatives, who recorded 21, 975 votes to place a distant second. Najeem Salam, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, occupied third place with 17, 958 votes.

In the election which held last Saturday, Oyetola polled 254,345 votes, coming second to Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party’s 254,698 votes.

But the electoral body declared the election inconclusive and fixed a rerun election in seven (7) polling units for today, Thursday.

The decision was because the difference (353) between the two leading parties, PDP and APC, is less than the number of cancelled votes (3,498).
