PDP BOT Chairman Endorses Bi-partisan National Assembly

The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, has described the new bi-partisan leadership of the eighth National Assembly as the best for the current direction in Nigeria’s march towards democratic growth and development.

He stated this on Sunday in a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Media, Emeka Nwapa, during an audience with PDP’s chieftains and supporters from across the country who called on him to discuss last Tuesday’s election of the new Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara.

The BoT Chairman said the emergence of the new Senate President from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu from the opposition, PDP, in a free, fair and transparent contest represented the collective readiness and resolve of the nation’s political class across the party divide to launch the nation on the path of people – oriented democracy.

Mohammed noted with delight that the election of the new leaders of the National Assembly was a great display by the lawmakers that national interest and collective good of the generality of Nigerians should override narrow, personal and parochial interest, and that Nigeria’s unity, peace, stability and development would continue to be on the legislative front burner.

According to the statement, “The elections of the new leaders of the eighth National Assembly has raised the bar of the democracy which our party, the PDP, has successfully nurtured in the last 16 years. A unique feature of the elections in the Senate and the House of Representatives is the element of bi-partisanship. It is an opportunity for all shades of political opinions to work together to move the nation forward. We are all stakeholders in the Project Nigeria.”

He congratulated and praised the law makers in both Chambers for the exemplary manner in which they elected their leaders according to their rules, noting that they were peaceful, orderly and democratic thereby exhibiting the highest respect for the legislature as an arm of government, anchored on the principle of separation of powers.

Describing the development as a watershed in the political evolution of the Nigerian State, he reiterated the readiness of the PDP to continue to offer a credible platform for a people-oriented opposition, in partnership with well-meaning political groups and stakeholders to ensure the sustenance of democracy in the country in the years ahead.

Yusuf Lasun, who emerged by the popular wish of their colleagues.
