Police Arrest Machete-Wielding Man In Abia

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital, were thrown into panic on Monday morning after a machete-wielding man suspected to be mentally unstable caused a public disturbance along major roads in the city.

The incident, which occurred around Aba Road and Ikot Ekpene Road, disrupted early morning activities as commuters and pedestrians scampered for safety.

Witnesses said the man, who initially concealed the weapon in a bag, suddenly pulled it out and began threatening road users, even attempting to attack a moving vehicle before targeting passersby.

In the ensuing confusion, a woman reportedly fell into a roadside gutter while trying to flee the scene. Her condition remains unclear as of the time of this report.

The situation was brought under control after concerned residents quickly alerted security agencies. Officers from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, swiftly responded and apprehended the suspect before he could inflict harm.

Confirming the incident in an exclusive interview with THE WHISTLER, the Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the man was taken into custody following prompt intervention.

“The DPO of Central Police Station, Umuahia, was alerted by members of the public about a young man, suspected to be of unsound mind, roaming the streets with a machete,” DSP Chinaka stated.

“He was immediately tracked, apprehended, and disarmed. Thankfully, no casualties were recorded.”

The police spokesperson added that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further evaluation. She assured residents that investigations are ongoing to determine his identity, mental health status, and possible threat level.

DSP Chinaka also used the opportunity to commend residents for their vigilance and quick action, urging the public to always report suspicious behavior promptly to security agencies.

Meanwhile, several residents have expressed relief at the swift intervention by the police, with many calling for increased surveillance and mental health support systems to prevent such incidents in the future.

“This could have ended tragically if the police didn’t act fast,” said Mr. Uche Nnaji, a shop owner along Aba Road.

“We thank them for their quick response, but the government should also look into the rising number of mentally unstable people on the streets.”
