Police Investigate Collapse Of Building Abandoned For 40 Years, Invites Owner

Officials of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, ASPPB, Monday, sealed off the premises of the one-storey uncompleted building which collapsed at Umuota village, Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state. The building collapsed on Sunday.The chairman/chief executive of the board, Barr Chike Maduekwe, told newsmen that the uncompleted building had existed for more than 40 years.In his words, “Our staffers have sealed off the building. It is a 40-year-old uncompleted building. The partial collapse affected one section of the building, and we’ve invited the owner and the caretaker to our office in Awka. After our meeting with them, we will pull the remaining section down. We appeal to our people to always obtain building permits before construction. This helps the board to monitor the development.”

The Sunday’s collapse killed a 40-year-old woman. Her baby however survived and currently receiving treatment. The incident was confirmed by the Anambra State police public relations officer, SP Haruna Mohammed. He said, “The scene of the incident was cordoned off by police operatives attached to Obosi Division and other security agencies in order to prevent hoodlums from gaining advantage to loot while efforts are ongoing to rescue other victims suspected to have been trapped in the collapsed building. The case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Reacting to the incident, the president-general of Obosi Development Union, Sir Daniel Igbokwubili, said, “The building belongs to the late Ebenezer Onwubufoh, a former bank manager.”
