Police Must Produce Fleeing Suspected Serial Killer Within 14 Days, Activist Tells IGP

The Executive Chairman,Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, Mr  Adeniyi  Sulaiman, has asked the Inspector General of Police, Mr Adamu Muhammed, to direct the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Nwachuku Enwonwu, to produce the prime suspect in the killings in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state. 

Sulaiman said the CP must be told that the suspect, 19-years old Sunday Shodipe, who escaped from the police custody on August 11 must be re-arrested within the next 14 days.

He said this in a statement issued in reaction to the escape of the suspect.

The activist threatened that the CHRSJ would institute a suit against the police to pay damages to the victims of the killings if the police failed to produce the suspect at the expiration of the ultimatum. 

He also called on the Police Service Commission to set up an independent panel of enquiry to investigate the suspicious escape. 

He said, ” All the policemen   in charge of the case of serial killer(Shodipe), should be arrested and prosecuted  for criminal negligence and deriliction of duty.

” If the 14-day-ultimatum lapses without rearresting Shodipe, the CHRSJ would not hesitate to approach the court  to seek payment of damages to the family of all the victims of the serial killings in the Akinyele Local Government Area  of Oyo State.”

The CP had while receiving the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr Ademola Babalola, said the suspect escaped while an inspector who was off-duty opened the cell and took the boy out to take his bath. 

He said two policemen were undergoing orderly room trail on the issue.

The command had on Sunday confirmed that the suspect who confessed to killing of some victims for ritual purposes escaped from their custody. 

The police explained that the suspect and others were charged to court and the court ordered that they should be remanded in police custody from where he disappeared.
