Kanayo, in an interview with THE WHISTLER in Enugu, said, “I am of the view that the election should be postponed if INEC is really independent, and if the government is interested in free and fair elections in Anambra State.

“But if they have the magic to allay the fears and apprehension of people vis-a-vis the call for sit at home, and the no campaigns or party materials preceding to November 6, then let them go ahead.”

He also commented on the huge security presence in the state. In his view, it is unhealthy for democracy:

“That is militarizing a democratic process. It only gives credence to the fact that the atmosphere is not safe for the election. People will be apprehensive and stay indoors.

“The president has been sent suggestions and appeals, the last was from the joint meeting of bishops and traditional rulers. These are the two groups that the government ought to have listened to and their coming together to make an appeal should be highly appreciated and respected.”

He blamed bad leadership for the lingering insecurity in the southeast. In his words, “Our biggest problem is that we don’t have good governors that feel the pulse of their people, or demand what is best for their people.

“On issues that concern their ethnic group, they ought to remove party togas and speak with one voice for their people.”
