Professor George Obiozor Emerges Ohanaeze President General

Professor George Obiozor, erstwhile ambassador of Nigerian to the United States, was Sunday elected new president general of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. Prof Obiozor polled 304 votes to beat his other two challengers to emerge victorious. The election held at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Imo State.

Among the Igbo leaders that were present during the election are Senator Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Engr Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige; minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu; Senator Andy Uba, former president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Igariwe; ArchBishop of the Enugu Province, Anglican Communion, and Most Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma.

The new Ohanaze president general was born on August 15, 1942. He studied at the Institute of African Studies, and Albert Schweitzer College. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1969, and from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in International Affairs.

He served as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States (2004 – 2008). Aside the US, he was also Nigeria’s high commissioner to Cyprus; and later Israel, from 1999 to 2003.

Prof Obiozor was once the director-general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. His most quoted quote is that, “Politics is a concentric series of conspiracies in which the last party to conspire emerges victorious.”
