Professor To Speak On ‘Shabby Treatment’ Of History At Inaugural Lecture

The question of the restructuring of Nigeria has been the focus of a heated discourse in recent times and for this reason Professor Okechukwu Edward Okeke of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, will on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 bring new perspectives to the issue.

Okeke, who is expected grace the 3rd Inaugural Lecture of the University titled “Restructuring and Related Matters: The Historian As Moderator,” will further discuss the background of the shabby treatment that has been given to history as a subject of study by the country’s authorities.

Recall that the Federal Government officially removed history as a subject from its basic school curriculum in 2007, making it an elective instead of a core subject at senior secondary level.

Following this action, Nigerian playwright and essayist, Wole Soyinka, speaking at the United Bank Of Africa (UBA) 2019 panel discussion disclosed how he felt when he learnt of the change in curriculum.

On the same note, the history Professor, during the lecture will proffer solution to critical national questions as it is expected that apart from the academic community, politicians for and against restructuring will attend the lecture.

Okeke is an accomplished Historian, earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) from the University of Nigeria Nsukka; secured his Master of Arts (M.A) from the University of Benin and his Bachelor of Arts (B.A) from University of Port Harcourt.

Meanwhile in 2018, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, announced the reintroduction of History Studies in the Nigerian school curriculum for primary and junior secondary levels.
